| LG had a strong first quarter this year with a 35.7% increase in handset sales totaling $3.346 billion for the number 5 handset maker. A new personal record for the company has also been reached with 24.4 million devices shipped, of that the emerging countries in the Asian and Middle East regions accounted for a 36% quarter on quarter increase in devices purchased while the USA and Korea were closer to 18%. ---

| Nokia 6500 Classic coming in silver Posted: 16 Apr 2008 06:51 AM CDT
Now if handset makers could inform us through a press release that some of their existing phones is available in new color, that would be awesome. I ranted about this in the past and I'll stop here… Nokia 6500 Classic is going to be released in new color - silver. Nokia's official website proves so, and some retailers like MobileFun in the UK are already accepting pre-orders, though they're not saying when the device will be available. The price is not disclosed, as well. The way I see it, there's no reason to make the silver version cost more. Check your local phone retailer within next couple of weeks if you crave for one. ---

| Nokia: Green phones still a few years away Posted: 16 Apr 2008 06:28 AM CDT
Nokia like most of today's modern companies cares about the environment, but says green phones are still a few years away. According to the company's director of Environmental affairs unit Markus Terho, being an eco-friendly will become "a competitive factor." As an example he said that by introducing smaller packages in early 2006, Nokia saved 100 million euros ($158.5 million) on transport and material costs by end of 2007. However due such problems as lack of availability of recycled materials in very large scale, it would take some time before such phones could reach the market. Still, Nokia is doing the best they can, with recycled materials already accounting for 40-60 percent of the metal parts in their current phones. In addition, they support mobile phone recycling programs and from time to time surprise us either with a concept (Remade) or a real eco-friendly device like their 3110 model. [Via: Reuters] ---

| MWg to launch its Windows Mobile smartphones in Europe Posted: 16 Apr 2008 05:56 AM CDT
MWg is gearing toward introducing its Windows Mobile smartphones in Europe. The company was previously known as O2 Asia, but after it was acquired by the electronics retailer Expansys, it was renamed to MWg. And now they'll be introducing two devices, MWg Atom V and MWg Zinc II, to select European markets. To be honest, we've no idea how MWg can stand the competition in Europe. Somehow we're betting Expansys won't save on promoting their products, but will that really be enough to gain any market share? We'll be keeping our eyes wide open for May 8, when MWg has scheduled a press conference. Stay tuned… [Via: the::unwired, engadget] ---

| Pantech concept phones for 2010 Posted: 16 Apr 2008 05:07 AM CDT
Pantech is one interesting company. They may not have a significant market share, but from time to time they surprise us with some neat phones like the dual-sliding Pantech Duo or Helio Ocean. Just like any modern enterprise, they are looking everywhere for an inspiration, hence they've been organizing a contest to see how people think mobile phones will look like in year 2010. Some of the designs collected were amazing. Not that we can envision using some of these right now, but then again, why not. The following images were made by students from various Korean Universities. Some we like, some not that much. Enjoy!

| Video: Enkin, GPS based augmented reality for Google's Android Posted: 16 Apr 2008 05:03 AM CDT The concept is simple, point your phone at the horizon and look at your screen to get more information about your surroundings. Rafael Spring and Max Braun wrote a program Enkin for Google's Android that does just that as their submission to the Android Developer Challenge. With the recent announcement that KML is now an official standard for marking up maps I can totally see a future where you can grab different data depending on your situation to overlay on your world or even share the data you created with your private friends or even the world! Enough hypothesizing, check out what these two guys did below and don't forget to download the PDF saying how they did it. [Via: Wireless Watch Japan] ---

| ABI Research: Mobile browser market to grow to 1.5 billion "units" in 2013 Posted: 16 Apr 2008 04:24 AM CDT In its new study "The Mobile Browser Market," ABI Research predicts that mobile browsers which can handle advanced client-side coding (JavaScript) will keep growing over the next five years, as the open-Internet browser (OIB) segment for mobile grows from 76 million in 2007 to nearly 700 million browsers delivered in 2013.
According to research director Michael Wolf, "The move towards web-based applications means browser and web services engines will become increasingly important for mobile, whether these are in a commercial browser implementation or a customized widget. Ultimately, the long-term trend away from native applications to web-based applications means browser and web services engines will be increasingly important components in the mobile environment." More information is available on ABI Research's website. ---

| Avis uses SMS to make rental process more seamless Posted: 16 Apr 2008 04:11 AM CDT First of all I don't think renting a car is a pain. It may be if you're renting it offline — renting via web is as seamless as it can be. However, that doesn't mean car renting companies should stop there and it's even a great news seeing them further enhancing the user experience.
Finally, if everything goes smoothly — i.e. people love the new SMS service — they'll be rolling out additional services via SMS, allowing customers to arrange even complicated rental reservations using mobile technology. Nice! [Via: textually.org, carrentals.co.uk] ---

| New telecoms satellite successfully launched; DVB-SH mobile TV coming to U.S. in 2009 Posted: 16 Apr 2008 03:48 AM CDT
The advantage over terrestrial mobile TV standards is obvious — a single satellite can provide nationwide coverage. Not that compatible devices can be purchased at the moment, but the infrastructure (i.e. satellite) is now on place and now it's up to other members of DVB-SH ecosystem to build new or update existing devices to sing along DVB-SH. Last, but not the least, mobile operators should also slowly start preparing for the upcoming (r)evolution and that will probably be the trickiest part, as some of them like Verizon and AT&T already have their mobile TV offerings in place. We'll see where this goes… As a reminder, Alcatel-Lucent alongside 3 Italia and RAI are in the midst of DVB-SH trial that started last year. [Via: PhoneMag] ---

| Courvoisier branded iPhone, BlackBerry 8800 Posted: 16 Apr 2008 03:24 AM CDT
Complex Magazine will be auctioning off Courvoisier branded iPhones, BlackBerry 8800 and iPods. We're not sure just how many of these will be sold through auction but somehow we don't doubt they'll sell well. Next time a guy enters a bar with one of these gadgets, he'll certainly know what to drink, I guess. Anyway, Courvoisier branded gadgets are set to hit eBay on May 19th, so if you enjoy Courvoisier that much and have an additional hundreds (if not thousands) bucks to spend, you may want to watch for this one. More photos follow after the jump.

| CSR debuts dual-mode Ultra Low Power (ULP) Bluetooth chip Posted: 15 Apr 2008 06:51 PM CDT
ULP allows for 10 times lower power consumption during regular Bluetooth connection and a 50-fold decrease in power-draw during Bluetooth data transfers. The ULP technology gets away with this minimal power consumption by stripping down the Bluetooth standard and doing away with the frequency spectrum-bloat. Unfortunately, ULP isn't compatible with current Bluetooth standards. So, it's a good thing that CSR has debuted their dual-mode ULP/Bluetooth 2.1 chip. The new Bluetooth module from CSR ensures old and new devices will be able to stay connected with Bluetooth standards - whatever they may be. We're expecting shipments to start later in 2008. | HTC and designer Nic Wong auction four special edition HTC Touch handsets for charity Posted: 15 Apr 2008 03:54 PM CDT What happens when you let a designer like Nic Wong put his design-mitts on one of your popular mobile phones? Well, if you HTC, you get these four special edition HTC Touch handsets. The wacky-cool HTC Touch offerings from HTC and Nic Wong are sure to turn heads wherever you go. That is, if you manage to post the wining bid for one of these handsets.
The Nic Wong-designed HTC Touches will be offered at auction, with proceeds going to charity - Singapore's Children's Cancer Foundation. There are no improvements to any of the HTC Touches' internals, but with those unique designs adorning the backside of the handset, we're sure the winning bidders will be more than happy with their new HTC Touch. Of course, the usual complement of TouchFLO, 2 megapixel camera, and Windows Mobile 6.0 are in tow. Shipping within Singapore will be free, but HTC will be shipping these handsets to anyone that puts up the winning bid. Check out the eBay auction here. [Via: PocketPC Thoughts] ---

| Microsoft completes Danger acquisition - Danger integrated into Premium Mobile Experiences Division Posted: 15 Apr 2008 03:39 PM CDT
Microsoft's move to create the PMX division underlies the company's renewed push to make their mobile offerings more user-friendly. That means we'll be seeing more Danger-influence on the Windows Mobile side of things, which is definitely a good thing. And, more interestingly, the new division could hint at a Microsoft-branded mobile phone in the near future. What's that you say? Zune Phone? [Via: MocoNews] ---

| T-Mobile's Shadow brand lives on - T-Mobile Shadow II spy pic Posted: 15 Apr 2008 03:27 PM CDT
The spy pic you see here, in all its low-quality graininess, is purportedly the T-Mobile Shadow II. The successor to the T-Mobile Shadow sports a similar design to its predecessor, but changes things up with some rounded edges and a glossy finish. The T-Mobile Shadow 2 should drop with support for myFaves and T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home UMA service - which means that WiFi is most likely in the cards for the Shadow II. We'll assume there's a numeric keypad under the sliding front-face, which would keep in line with the T-Mobile Shadow's popular formula. [Via: TmoNews] ---

| Nokia says good bye to employees in Bochum while RIM says hello Posted: 15 Apr 2008 03:21 PM CDT
Nokia closed a plant in Bochum citing the cost of labor was too high. RIM saw an opportunity, plenty of talented people who've been working on Nokia mobile devices for 1989 are now out of a job, which is why they're planning on opening up a research faciliity and looking to hire 300 people. Nokia's Supervisory Board member Ulrike Kleinebrahm told Thomson Financial that RIM is "in Bochum and is holding talks" and that it is "talking to engineers, not workers." [Via: Forbes] ---

| Sega's Super Monkey Ball promises casual iPhone gaming Posted: 15 Apr 2008 03:04 PM CDT
One of the few games demonstrated at the iPhone SDK launch was Spore. But, games like Spore aren't designed for a casual gaming experience. Gameplay evolves and builds on previous sessions. On the other hand, Sega's Super Monkey Ball, the other game that was shown at the iPhone SDK launch, is the embodiment of casual iPhone gaming. Pick up the iPhone, fire up a new game session, and quit when you're bored - casual gaming is easy and fun. Ethan Einhorn sat down with GameCyte to talk about the development of Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone. Einhorn explains that the casual gaming experience on the iPhone will be much like that on the Wii and gaming performance that's on par with other handheld gaming devices. Sega and Apple apparently have a great working relationship, so we can probably look forward to more iPhone games from Sega. That's great news and all, but let's just hope that other iPhone game developers are pushing their iPhone games just as hard. [Via: GameCyte] ---

Still, ABI argues it's important to note that despite the best efforts, web usage on mobile devices has a significant distance to go in closing the gap with PC-based browsers.
That being said, Avis has partnered with Cellpoint Mobile to allow its customers to add additional services like mobile internet access and GPS navigation via SMS. In addition, they are using text messaging to get feedback from the customers. Not sure whether the feedback idea is that great, though. I wouldn't want my phone to ring while I'm on the road only to find out it's Avis asking me do I enjoy my ride.
A company called ICO Global Communications launched a new $500m telecoms satellite to bring DVB-SH mobile TV to the U.S. Apparently, the new satellite will be able to deal with between ten and fifteen simultaneous streams and is powerful enough to require no dish in order to broadcast.

Mobile news applications are really starting to take hold in the mobile space. With newer mobile phones, especially smartphones, making it easier to check up on news from around the web, it's a bit surprising that news outlets are targeting mobile phones with native applications. Still, a news application is a welcome addition to any handset's application portfolio.

AOL? What's AOL? Remember when AOL was the premier internet service and the most popular way to get online? Well, AOL's internet service is pretty much dead at this point, but that doesn't mean that AOL isn't going strong in the web-world. AOL has just launched their AOL Mobile Search portal for the iPhone.
